Reaching our Audiences

We’ve provided slightly longer versions of the messages—“translations”—which share some common language, but also include details or ideas we know are important to each one of our key audiences. These messages don’t have to be used in their entirety but give you an idea of how all the components fit together into a tailored story.

Alumni

In this translation, we:

  • Acknowledge that BYU is proud of them
  • Remind them that graduating debt-free (or close to it) gave them more options
  • Assure them that their degree will continue to grow in value (there are many ways to elaborate on this, depending on the context)
  • Express what their staying connected means to the university (not just the other way around)

Look at what we’ve built together. Nearly 150 years ago, Brigham Young University began on the edge of the American frontier, the dream of Latter-day Saint pioneers who insisted that learning was as necessary to their lives as food and shelter. Today, BYU is the flagship of our Church Educational System and the world-class embodiment of our faith’s theological imperative to educate. It stands out as a university where teaching and research are equally valued, and affordability and excellence go hand in hand. As BYU moves forward, you can be confident that it will always be devoted to helping students reach their divine potential and prepare to serve God and His children—a place where belief enhances inquiry, study amplifies faith, and revelation leads to rich understanding. You continue to inspire BYU to be among the exceptional universities in the world and an essential university for the world.

General Public (non-Church Members)

In this translation, we:

  • Articulate a world view—why BYU matters beyond the Church
  • Contextualize BYU in the broader higher ed landscape
  • Emphasize that affordability does not come at the expense of excellence
  • “Excellence” can be further elaborated on depending on the situation (selectivity of admissions, graduate program rankings, faculty research)
