How to Use BYU Messaging
Every communication from BYU should reinforce one or more of the message themes. Depending on the audience, the context, and the nature of the communication, the wording and expression may vary, but the themes of BYU’s message should be evident.
When to Use Messaging Verbatim
Repeated use of terms is helpful to introduce audiences to BYU. Exact phrasing is appropriate
- for audiences who are unfamiliar with BYU;
- in marketing contexts;
- when using an institutional voice; or
- in official speeches, letters, or essays from leaders of the university.
Note: When communicating in an institutional voice, incorporate messaging language naturally, without quotation marks or attribution.
When to Use Different Wording
Varied expressions of the BYU message are helpful to add depth of understanding or to express an authentic personal perspective. Variety also alleviates audience fatigue among those who know us well. Different phrasing is appropriate
- in news contexts;
- when expressing an individual’s personal experience with BYU;
- in BYU classroom discussions; and
- in personal interactions.
